When sugarcane syrup is fermented it produces renewable hydrocarbon molecules that can be transformed into high performance biobased oil. At Castrol we use this biobased oil in our Castrol EDGE Bio-Synthetic formulation to deliver a more renewable alternative without compromising the 100% Castrol EDGE performance you’d expect.
The sugarcane used in the manufacture of Castrol EDGE Bio-Synthetic is sourced from Brazil. Brazilian sugarcane is one of the most land-efficient feedstocks for producing biofuels and biolubricants.
Almost 90% of Brazilian sugarcane production takes place in South-Central Brazil, over 1,200 miles away from the Amazon. Castrol’s sugarcane is sourced from a number of locations, all of which have been cultivated for farmland for more than 50 years.
Biolubricants can be blended into traditional lubricants without the need for engine modifications. 25% of Castrol EDGE Bio-Synthetic is derived from sugarcane – a renewable source.
The 25% renewable content is confirmed by ASTM testing* carried out by an external laboratory and is validated by the USDA Certified Biobased Product Label that appears on pack.
*The ASTM D6866 test was developed in the United States and is the test protocol used by the USDA for their BioPreferred program.
To achieve the carbon neutral status, data from Castrol’s production plants, product formulations, manufacturing, packaging and logistics were all taken into account. Once the data was collected, Castrol then created a carbon reduction plan and committed to the annual certification process.
The measured CO2 produced during the life of Castrol EDGE Bio-Synthetic is then offset, via BP Target Neutral, by supporting projects that either avoid the release of CO2 or by supporting projects that absorb the amount of CO2 from the air that would have otherwise stayed in the atmosphere.
